DATE On March 09, 2022

“Never give up, even though giving up seems easier,” says Rockford Career College graduate Christina Oliver. Even when her courses seemed challenging, Christina always kept her professional goal in mind. Her diligent studying paved the way for her to become a welder. We are so proud of Christina for graduating from the program and starting the career of her dreams.

What You Learn in a Welding Program

For each graduate of a program, we highlight three different courses. During the program, Christina took courses such as: SMAW 2-G, 5-G Pipe Welds; Core Curriculum: Craft Skills; and Student Success Strategies.

In these courses, she learned about:

  • Setting up SMAW equipment for open-root pipe welds; preparing for and making open-root pipe welds on carbon steel; and making open-root V-groove welds with SMAW equipment on pipe in the 2G and 5G positions
  • Identifying and following safe work practices and procedures, properly inspecting and using safety equipment, using and maintaining hand and Power 95 tools found in construction, selecting and installing circuit breakers and fuses, and utilizing materials handling techniques
  • The basic principles to achieve success in various settings, including time and stress management strategies; study skills; professionalism; policies and procedures; learning and communication methods; and basic word processing, presentation, and spreadsheet software skills

How Our Graduate Became a Welder

Like Christina, you too could become a welder in just a matter of months and start your career journey in this interesting and necessary profession. Our welding program prepares students via hands-on training in the lab. Students become proficient in various welding types, including: gas, shielded metal arc (STICK), metal inert gas (MIG), flux core, and tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding. The College also pays for students to test for a welding process to earn a Certified Welding Inspection report with the American Welding Society.
