“Your power is in your knowledge,” says Rockford Career College graduate Terry Wadington. “The more knowledge you obtain, the more power you have to make a difference.” Once he was ready for a new career, Terry did not hesitate to gather all the knowledge he could. After enrolling in our Associate of Applied Science in Surgical Technology program, he studied carefully and developed his practical skills. His dedication allowed him to graduate on our President's List with a 4.0 GPA. We are so proud of Terry for achieving his educational goal and beginning a career he loves.

What You Learn in a Surgical Technology AAS Program

For each graduate of a program, we highlight three different courses. During the program, Terry took courses such as: Surgical Technology Principles and Practice, Advanced Operating Room Skills, and Medical Terminology and Systems.

In these courses, he learned about:

  • Fundamental principles of surgical microbiology and infection control, including clinical asepsis and techniques; the historical development of microbiology; microscopes; cell structure and theory; microbial function and classification; infectious processes and terminology; therapeutic agents utilized within surgery; basic terminology associated with pharmacology, medication classifications, indications, and modalities of anesthesia for surgical settings; a variety of anesthesia equipment and supplies; relationships between drugs and surgical procedures; and emergencies that may occur during a procedure and how to handle them
  • Intraoperative and post-operative procedures and techniques as they relate to the previous surgical procedures classes
  • Medical terminology required to function successfully in a professional medical office

Additionally, Terry completed courses such as College Math and Life Science to fulfill general education requirements for his associate degree.
