Comparing Your Success to Others

It is SO hard not to compare yourself to others. “Why are they doing better than me?” “Why are they making more money than me?” “Why did they get that job before me?” But the fact is, you have to stop. This was a struggle for me to adjust to. I couldn’t wrap my head around why all my friends were getting jobs right after college and I wasn’t. Was there something wrong with me? What wasn’t I doing right? I was doing everything right, what I was doing wrong was comparing my journey to others. If you compare yourself to those around you, you’re never going to be satisfied with yourself or what you have accomplished. There is always going to be someone better than you. And that’s okay. Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses. All you can do is focus on yourself and your journey. The only competition should be yourself, and how you can be better than you were yesterday. What can you keep doing to reach your goals? It matters what YOU are doing, not others. You only get one you, and all that matters is how you see yourself.

Listening to Rejection
No. Nope. Nada. No way. You are going to hear those words more than you would like. But what if you actually listened to rejection? NO one would be where they are today if they listened to the people that told them no. If anything, rejection should make you more motivated to prove those people wrong who didn’t believe in you. Perfect example, Michael Jordan. If he actually listened to those who didn’t believe in him, he wouldn’t have become a legendary basketball star. Another great example is Taylor Swift. Can you just imagine all those music producers who are kicking themselves for not signing her?!

It is tough hearing rejection after rejection. You need to remember why you are going after your goals and why you want to be successful. I mean let’s be real, you learn from your mistakes, not from success. Have you ever heard of a business that didn’t face any rejection? Even your lemonade stand when you were younger faced some hard days. If you are passionate about what you are doing, then in the end you will succeed.

“You fail and then what? Life goes on. It’s only when you risk failure that you discover things.” –Lupita Nyong’o

More Money More Problems
If money wasn’t a factor, what career would you pursue? Take a moment to think about it. Have a career or idea in mind? That is what your passion is. If you are only going after your dreams because you want to make a lot of money, you are foolish. I hear a lot of my friends say “Yeah I am only going into this field because I’ll make a lot of money.” Are you kidding me?! That is not the reason you choose a career. You need to have passion about what you are doing. Without passion what’s the point? Find a job you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.

Social Media
Ugh why does it have to be so addicting! I mean really, why do we care what the girl from your high school P.E. class is eating for lunch? You haven’t talked to her in years! But we still need to be updated with what everyone is doing and eating for lunch. With all of the new smartphones and apps it’s almost impossible not to have some sort of social media connection with one click. Make sure to use your social media in moderation so it’s not taking away from your productivity. Using social media can be advantage to some businesses depending on their target audience but for others, it can be a huge distraction. And no one wants to say that Facebook got in the way of achieving their dreams. That’s just silly.

“I fear the day when the technology overlaps with our humanity. The world will only have a generation of idiots.” Yikes! A wise man named Albert Einstein said this, maybe you’ve heard of him?

Complaining
Talking about our problems becomes a toxic habit. It’s okay to admit that complaining feels really good sometimes. The more you do it the easier it becomes. But what does it do for you? Nothing. Is it going to help you achieve your goals faster? No, it’s just a waste of time. You just are filling your mind with excess negatively. Complaining will ruin your motivation because what’s the point? It will never work anyways.

“Don’t complain; just work harder.” ― Randy Pausch

There you have it. The 5 reasons you’re not successful. Break these habits to stop standing in the way of your own success!
