What is Central Sterile Processing Technology?

Central Sterile Processing Technology is best described as the step-by-step practice of decontaminating medical devices, tools and instruments used in a healthcare setting. The Sterile Processing Department (SPD) is typically in charge of this work within a hospital or healthcare organization. Typically, the degree of cleaning and sterilization a tool or instrument undergoes is dependent on its use, function in surgery and construction material. There are a variety of steps that are part of the sterilization process including manual cleaning, use of ultrasonic cleansing, disinfection, decontamination and finally prep & pack.

What Career Options are Available in Central Sterile Processing Technology?

Central Sterile Processing is a fundamental and necessary part of any hospital or a healthcare organization that conducts surgical procedures such as surgery centers, dialysis facilities, outpatient care centers or dental offices. The primary job role within the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) is a Central Sterile Processing Technician (SPTs). SPTs' primary goal is to prevent the spread of infection by ensuring all products used in operations are properly cleaned and disease-free. They are involved in inspecting devices, tools and instruments and take steps to ensure these products are properly decontaminated for ongoing use in surgery. This work is both fast-paced and requires a great degree of attention to detail.

How do I Start a Central Sterile Processing Technology Program?

Sterile processing technicians are the unsung heroes of every surgery. They are perhaps the single most important defense against infections. To become a Central Sterile Processing Technician, one should be trained in the best practices and instruments used in the cleaning process. One of the best ways to gain this training is through a diploma program. The Stautzenberger Central Sterile Processing Technology program covers the three main phases of sterile processing: decontamination, preparation and packing, and sterilization. Our various classes include anatomy and physiology, allowing you to succeed not only in sterile processing, but also in other medical positions. Our program prepares you to take both the CBSPD (Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution) exam and the IAHCSMM (International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management) exam to become a Central Sterile Processing Distribution Technician (CSPDT). Passing the exam could present you with more employment opportunities.
