Creating is what defines us. Songs, homes, businesses, cars, novels, and roads are all prime examples of dreams turned into realities. At my workplace, I have the opportunity to create every day. In fact, my creations are often used as parts in customers' own creations. My name's Trevon, and I'm a CNC machinist.  

Career Opportunities in CNC and Robotic Manufacturing Technology

Computer numerical control machines are used to cut and shape materials like metals and plastics. Although CNC machining is more precise and efficient than its manual counterpart, the process requires knowledgeable workers who are well-versed in the various aspects of the machines. As a result, CNC is a field with several career paths. You may start your career operating the machines, but you could work your way up to reading blueprints and programming as a machinist. Another potential career path is that of the assembler.

Closely related to CNC is robotic manufacturing technology. While CNC machines focus on one task at a time, robotic technology often handles multiple tasks. Being knowledgeable in both robotics and CNC could help you in your search for an employer.

What's a Typical Day Like for CNC Machinists?

I begin each day at the factory by checking to make sure the CNC machines are functioning properly. I then determine what products I need to make and program the machines accordingly. Most of the day is spent operating the machines. I make regular reports to my supervisors of how the machines are running. It is also my responsibility to troubleshoot and repair any malfunctioning machines. Since I have been working there for many years, I train new employees to run the machines as well. That's why leadership and communication skills are important in this profession. At the end of the day, I assist my coworkers with taking down the machines. I keep busy, but it's always rewarding to see everything I've created that day.
