According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Veterinary Technician Careers are projected to increase by 19% from 2014-2024, with 17,900 new job openings.

 

Veterinary Technicians help licensed Veterinarians perform medical tests and procedures, diagnose illnesses, and animal injuries.  Vet Techs can work in labs, animal clinics, or animal hospitals.

 

The Rockford Career College Veterinary Technician Associate of Applied Science Degree Program is a 24-month program that helps students develop skills necessary to properly restrain animals, collect samples, administer anesthesia, radiographic procedures, IV placement, medication administration, sample collection, nursing care, and more.

 

Rockford Career College Veterinary Technician Program Objectives:

  • Perform basic patient examinations and collect data on vital signs.
  • Restrain and manage small animals in clinical situations.
  • Administer medications by common drug routes and prepare pharmaceuticals as prescribed by a veterinarian.
  • Prepare anesthetic delivery systems, induce anesthesia, and monitor patients under anesthesia.
  • Prepare and maintain the surgical area and assist during surgical procedures.
  • Perform dental prophylactic procedures on dogs and cats.
  • Produce standard diagnostic radiographs.
  • Collect and process samples for diagnostic tests, such as blood chemistries, differentials, culture/sensitivities and EKGs.
  • Perform basic veterinary practice management including computer applications.
  • Recognize behavioral signs of small animals.
  • Educate clients on their pet’s health, nutrition and euthanasia.
